Few days ago I bought the Vitamin E series moisture serum from The Body Shop. Upon application it makes the skin feel hot… Not a burning sensation, more like blood rushing to the skin. “Wait a minute! I know this feeling” was my first thought. Upon inspecting the ingredients, the reason was obvious. The serum contains a very popular in Europe herb oil, that I have noticed is not popular here in Asia almost at all!
I’m taking about castor seed oil. I’ve first learned about it’s properties from my grandma
In Poland, my home country, a bottle of castor seed oil can be bought for something about $1 in every drugstore. It has a strong sour taste, and strong smell, which explains, why most people rather use pharmaceuticals, that refer to it…
So what it does? Aside from having antiseptic properties, it slight irritates the skin, expanding the blood vessels. If ingested, it will create a blood flow to the intestines . So what does my granny recommend the oil for?
- Building strong brows and lashes – every night, before bed rub a bit of oil into the brows and base of lashes. After 3 weeks they will become thicker and stronger. I tried this trick, but since I sleep on my face (not very good for the skin… I know), it would rub off on the pillow.
- Fighting hair loss – rub a bit of oil into the skin where hair is loosing it’s strength, and either leave for the night, or wrap with warm towel for an hour or two, and then wash thoroughly. Some people mix it in with their favorite hair conditioner, so it will work more efficiently. I can confirm it works!
- Revive skin by adding a few drops of it to the your bath. Although it’s an oil, it dissolves completely.
I’m not even sure if you can buy castor oil in Singapore (I stock up whenever I have chance from Europe), but if you have problems with weak hair, or dry skin it’s worth a hunt. Or you can buy the moisture serum from The Body Shop – unfortunately only the serum has castor oil in it
Shame shame… cuz the effect is so nice!
Ok, I shared my granny’s secret knowledge about beauty, how about you share with me now? ;D Any secret recipes you know? Or herbs worth incorporating into home supplies?

Ooh i love this entry! Very good secret indeed. Looking at your luscious hair i think it’s definitely worth trying
Though i have yet to find castor seed oil being sold anywhere here.
My turn to share: Baking soda. I don’t know if you’d already tried it but so far it’s working great for me. I was skeptical at first so I googled ways to use baking soda for the face and read that it can be mixed with a facial cleanser for an exfoliating effect. Or mixed with water into a paste-like texture to be used as a mask. Great for sebum control and absorbing oil. Make sure to use moisturizer after that
Thanks for your tips!! <3 I've heard Olive oil is amazing for skin and hair, and pretty much anywhere else, even rubbing into your skin or nails, or mixing together with sugar to exfoliate!!
xoxoxo
@Sarah ZA
oh! I’ve heard a lot of good stuff about baking soda
So lucky I have it in my cupboard hehe gonna try it out, since my skin feels so flaky lately :O
@Sarah I love olive oil based hair care!
It’s my fav! Still bit apprehensive about trying to rub oil into my skin… because for sometimes feel the scent is strong and quite distinct. But then again, having awesome skin and nails is like so worth it ;D
Awesome tips! It’s amazing how much our Grannies know =)
I don’t think I learned much about beauty tips from my Grandmother, but I did learn to “steal” and save the shampoos and lotions from hotels haha.
My mom love this one too! ^^ I think she has the whole collection of TBS Vit E.. It suits her dry skin perfectly..
A beauty secret from my granny.. would be the power of aloe vera for hair, skin and face. Great for hydrating and sensitive skin.. ^^
